Pangasinan hosts final leg of national chess tourney

LINGAYEN—The final elimination round of the 2013 National Age Group Chess Championships will be held from March 23 to 26 during the Pangasinan leg at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center, hosted by the provincial government of Pangasinan.

Jayson Gonzales, executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), said the four-day tournament will determine the qualifiers to the grand finals to be held in Taguig City sometime in April.

The winners in the grand finals will represent the Philippines in the 2013 Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Age Group competitions in Bangkok, Thailand on June 8 to 17 and the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Mashdad, Iran on June 20 to 27.

The national chess tourney organized by the NCFP in coordination with Bayan Muna Partylist is set to be joined by some 200 chess players nationwide who will compete in six age categories.

Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. will lead the tournament participants in their oath of sportsmanship and make the ceremonial move to start the tournament proper during the tournament’s kick off on March 23.

NCFP president Prospero Pichay will grace the opening program and will give a talk while Vice-Gov. Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. will welcome the participants.

Modesto Operana, executive director III, said the Pangasinan Elimination will be divided into boys and girls divisions under the following categories which are: 20 years old and below, 16 years old and below, 14 years old and below, 12 years old and below, 10 years old and below and 8 years old.
