International chess tourneys eyed for Pangasinan
LINGAYEN—Following the successful hosting of the National Age Group Chess Championship last week, the province is ripe for an international chess tournament soon, according to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) head Prospero Pichay Jr.
“Hindi mahirap hilingin kay Gov. (Amado) Espino (Jr.) na magpatournament kami dito. Hindi pa nga kami nakakahiling, um-oo na siya,” said Pichay, adding that he has already discussed the possibility with Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan.
Pichay and Espino awarded the top ten winners in the six age divisions of the three-day National Age Group Chess Championship
The top players in the six age divisions, boys/girls categories) were: for Under-8- Darwin Villanueva/ Jocelyn Reyes; for Under-10- John Ruiz Bravo/ Ma. Elayza Villa; for Under-12- Emmanuel Van Paler/ Holythurs Mariel Pangan; for Under-14- Eric Robert Yap/ Samantha Glo Revita; for Under-16- Antoni Almodal III/ Merlene Membrere; and for Under-20- Jose Carlo Castro/Gladys Hazelle Romero.
The champions will represent the country in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Age Group Chess Championship this coming June to be held in Thailand.
Meanwhile, Grand Master Jayson Gonzales, NCFP Executive Director, noted that “may legacy ang chess sa Pangasinan” citing Pangasinense Rodolfo Tan Cardoso, the first national junior champion of the country and the first international master in Asia.–Johanne R. Macob
