Ilocos Sur rider wins, Valenzuela tops exhibition race

LITTLE-known Ilocos Sur rider Rolando Burgos Jr. pedaled home alone to win the 85-kilomter Laoac Cycling Challenge executive-master division held March 4 in conjunction the town fiesta.

Burgos, who wittingly stayed with the pack at the first round of three, suddenly pulled and spurted away for good in the last five kilometers to bag the P3,000 top prize with a trophy.

Christian Linda who came in at second bagged P2,000 and also a trophy while Mangaldanon Simeon Gelacio checked in third worth P1,000.

The bikefest, sponsored by Excellent Noodles, attracted 34 participants with the town’s chief executive Silverio Alarcio, Alex Billan and former Tour of Luzon champions Rufino Gabot and Gonzalo Recodos handing the cash prizes, trophies and medals to the top 10 winners.

In the open category exhibition race, 2013 Ronda Pilipinas king Irish Valenzuela topped the event, outsprinting his five breakaway partners in the last 250 meters. Cris Joven placed second and Rudy Roque finished third.

Alarcio, who sponsored the open event that was participated in by 30 professional cyclists, awarded the incentive prizes to the top 12 winners. The top six winners clocked the distance in one hour, 58 minutes and 56 seconds.–JAGJr.
