HS teachers to get special infotech training
LINGAYEN—More than 100 public high school teachers in the Third District will receive a special training on the integration of information technology in their classes to help students become more competitive in this digital age.
“In Pangasinan, competence in the use of technology is sorely lacking, thus having a negative impact on its attractiveness for locators of the ICT and Business Process Outsourcing,” said 3rd District Rep. Ma. Rachel Arenas who initiated the program.
The 105 teachers will undergo a free two-week training on Education with Technology from the faculty of Foothill Community College, located in Silicon Valley and considered one of the best community colleges in California, who are coming to Pangasinan on April 1.
Following the two-week intensive classroom, there will be a six to seven-month online monitoring.
The participating teachers will also be equipped to train their peers for knowledge transfer.
Arenas allocated P10-million from her Priority Development Assistance Fund for the project and has tied up with PhilDutch Scholarship Inc., a non-government organization specializing in providing specialized training and skills upgrading of professionals, and the Department of Trade and Industry.
Arenas said the project aims to deliver the benefits of technology to the teachers so that they can provide improved learning methods to students and early exposure on the proper use of technology.
She expressed confidence that once taught, students will be more open to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their daily lives and expose them to possible careers in ICT or in the sciences.
Arenas noted that Bill Gates, chairman of the Microsoft Corporation and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, went to math class at Foothill College in April 2010.
“More investments in professional development for ICT must be invested in the province,” Arenas said noting the objective of the Philippine Digital Strategy to assimilate ICT in the private and public sectors.–Eva Visperas
