Asian Fisheries gets TESDA-accreditation
THE Asian Fisheries Academy (AFA), a training center for fishery technicians supervised by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Integrated Fisheries Technology and Development Center (BFAR-NIFTDC) in Dagupan, is now an accredited institution of the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Following the issuance of an NC 2 (National Certificate 2) accreditation to the school, the BFAR-NIFTDC and TESDA signed last week a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) establishing AFA as a Satellite Training and Assessment Center of TESDA, the first of its kind Region 1.
The MOA was signed Wednesday by Dr. Westly Rosario representing BFAR-NIFTDC and Jovencio Ferrer, chief of the TESDA-Pangasinan Training Institute, witnessed by BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden.
Rosario said the signing was a milestone because now all the trainors of AFA, including himself, are now also accredited as NC 2 trainors.
The signing coincided with the launching of a three-month Comprehensive Training on Aquaculture and Post-Harvest Technologies at AFA with former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., now an active fish entrepreneur, as guest of honor and speaker.
Some 40 trainees from Pangasinan, La Union, Cagayan, Pampanga, Zambales, Quezon and Nueva Ecija have enrolled in the short course consisting of 20 percent lectures and 80 percent fieldwork in fish farms.
The graduates will acquire an NC 2 certification, which means they can be employed in fish farms locally and abroad as fish technicians.
FTWV PARTNERSHIP
Meanwhile, BFAR-NIFTDC also signed a separate MOA with private firm Filipinas True World Venture (FTWV), which committed to give a modest allowance to each student.
Moreover, FTWW promised to provide employment to 10 graduates while the others can be sent to Taiwan for further training by the company and eventually sent abroad for employment.
The MOA was also signed by Rosario and Andy Liang, FTWV president and chief executive officer, and Masayuki Kubo, chief operations officer.
FTVW currently operates fish farms in Dagupan and other parts of Pangasinan as well as in Sto. Tomas, La Union, and is now eyeing to expand its operations in the Visayas.
