LINGAYEN—Following the command conference called by the Regional Special Operations Task Group (RSOTG) last January 26, the provincial police said it is activating its links with barangay to strengthen its intelligence division as it intensifies its campaign against loose firearms.

Senior Supt. Marlou Chan, officer-in-charge of the provincial police, said that aside from the proactive measures being implemented today, improved intelligence efforts are still needed to deter crime, particularly shooting incidents, the main concern raised during the command conference.

Chan said the existing police force has undergone sufficient training on intelligence work and there would be no need for augmentation.

“What we need is to activate our machinery in the intelligence division particularly the barangay peacekeeping action team,” he added.

At the same time, the provincial police will intensify its campaign against loose firearms through checkpoints, search warrants and quick police response.

He revealed that despite the operations conducted such as “Oplan Katok”, there are still about 1,700 guns considered as loose firearms in the province.

Under Oplan Katok, police officers went house-to-house to remind gun owners to renew their expired gun licenses.–Hilda M. Austria
