TAKING part in the nationwide Million Volunteer Run staged by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) last February 3 were more than 5,000 Pangasinenses who joined in two areas organized by PRC-Pangasinan, in Dagupan City and Rosales town.

Red Cross Chapter Administrator Florame Magalong said the turnout of 5,540 runners exceeded their 5,000 target.

“We hope by this activity, they (runners) signify their commitment and interest to become a volunteer not only to PRC but also to other humanitarian organizations,” Magalong said.

She stressed that for the Red Cross, volunteerism does not only mean being blood donors but becoming humanitarian soldiers who can be tapped in times of disasters.

Dr. Carmelo Vidal, chair of the million volunteer run, echoed the message that the runners were part of saving lives of the underprivileged and underserved.

“They are not necessarily blood donors because Red Cross is not just about blood but it also offers lifesaving services,” he said.

The top winners were given 50 percent scholarships from University of Pangasinan and AMA Computer School.

Acknowledged with the biggest contingent were Salapingao Elementary School in Dagupan (elementary); Bocboc High School in Aguilar town (Secondary); and University of Luzon (Tertiary).

Among those who joined the run was San Fabian Mayor Irene Libunao, a regular blood donor who holds a “galloner” award.(PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
