LINGAYEN—After delivering his State of the Province Address last February 18, Governor Amado Espino Jr. was reassured by his party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), of its support for his re-election bid in May.

NPC President Mark O. Cojuangco, a former congressional representative, reiterated the party’s staunch support for the governor amid the legal issues filed against him, including alleged involvement in the illegal numbers game jueteng and for masterminding the killing of a mayor last December.

Napakalaki ng pagbabago ng Pangasinan from the last administration… so many things to be proud of… yong batikos na dumarating talagang lumalabas na political lang ang motivation,” Cojuangco said.

Espino, along with 1st District Representative Jesus Celeste, were recently charged with murder before the Department of Justice for the killing of Infanta Mayor Ruperto Martinez.

When the issue came out two weeks ago, the NPC chief already expressed the coalition’s support for both Espino and Celeste, tagging the case as mere attempt at “character assassination.”

Meanwhile, Celeste expressed confidence that Espino will still win his re-election bid and that “everything will be back in order” after the election.

Babalik din po ‘yan sa dati,” Celeste said, referring to the programs of the provincial government.- Johanne R. Macob
