LINGAYEN–Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. led the awarding of a rice thresher to Barangay Tumbar Farmers and Fisherfolks Association last February 12 in a simple rite at the Capitol grandstand here.

The project is part of the Livelihood Assistance Program offered by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in partnership with the provincial government.

Espino urged the barangay farmers and fisherfolks to take care of the equipment and utilize it wisely so that more equipment will be awarded in the future.

Pangasinan, according to the governor, will remain an agricultural province in several more decades because it still lacks the necessary industry that will catapult it into a highly-industrialized site.

“This is the least that we can offer to our farmers and fishermen as of the time being. We urge you to take good care of this equipment as we thank our partner agencies like the DOLE,” Espino said.

At the same time, Espino noted that his administration has endeavored to launch strategic programs to improve agriculture in Pangasinan since July 2007 that resulted to several remarkable breakthroughs as proven by various awards and citations.

Meanwhile, Violeta Buenaventura, the DOLE District representative based in Alaminos City, commended the Espino administration for prioritizing the welfare of the marginalized sector to further the cause of development in Pangasinan.

Pag-ingatan at pagyamanin sana ninyo ito dahil hindi lang po ito dole-out ng gobyerno. Imo-monitor po namin kayo upang makasiguro na nagagamit sa wastong paraan ang equipment,” Buenaventura said.

Anacleto de los Santos, president of the farmers association, thanked the provincial government and the DOLE as he vowed on behalf of the group to use the equipment as it was intended.

The thresher will benefit some 47 farmers in the southern barrio of Lingayen town.

Joining the governor in the awarding rites were Board Member Von Mark Mendoza, Lingayen Mayor Ernesto“Jonas” Castaneda, and PESO Chief Alex F. Ferrer. (PIO/Ruby R. Bernardino)
