Dukes douse Flames in J. Fernandez Cup

PUMPED up after suffering a mortifying defeat in their last game against arch rival University of Luzon Golden Tigers, the three-time Region 1 PRISAA winner Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes regained their championship composure by thwarting the University of Pangasinan-PHINMA Flames in the ongoing 2013 Jimmy Fernandez Cup cagefest.

The Dukes, winning on a come-from-behind 97-93 game, were trailing by as much 15 points in the first half and appeared to be on the verge of another shameful defeat.

But slowly but surely, they slashed the score difference with Julius Palaganas and JayR Andrade alternating in scoring in the third quarter which closed with just a six-point difference, 77-71.

Two straight treys by Palaganas and a conversion by Andrade and point-guard George Alipio propelled the Dukes to tie the game which then turned to a see-saw battle from thereon until the inexhaustible Alipio, with some luck, sealed the game for the Dukes.

The victory gives the Tapuac-based Dukes a share in the lead with defending champion PAMMA, with identical win-loss cards of 3-1.

The Flames, on the other hand, suffered its second defeat after four outings.

“Credit should be given to the boys and the coaching staff for preparing intensively for this grudge match,” said LNU’s assistant athletic director Angel Gumarang. .–JAGJr.
