Even in this internet age, snail-mail and the postman have yet to become obsolete.
And the government’s Postal Office in this town is badly in need of a postman to deliver mail and packages to households after two of its postmen retired in October last year.
For the past three months, residents have had to go to the Postal Office to check themselves for letters or packages that they are expecting.
Merlita Valerio, the postmaster of the Binmaley Postal Office, said mails are piling up at their office with no one to deliver them, especially those that are not expected by the recipients.
KAPITAN VOLUNTEERS
Only three barangay chairmen, out of the 33 barangays in the town, have so far volunteered to get their constituents’ mails and deliver them to the recipients in their respective communities.
Valerio is the only remaining employee of the town’s Postal Office and she pays a lady assistant from her own pocket to help her with the tasks.
Valerio’s house help also assists in errands and a male municipal government employee has been temporarily detailed by the municipal government in her office.
Valerio said she is still for the main postal office to assign a postman in town.–Eva Visperas
