MANGALDAN— Former Vice Mayor Bernardo Abalos took his oath as the new mayor here, replacing the late Mayor Herminio Romero who died of heart attack on December 23.

After being sworn in, Abalos ordered all Philippine flags in the town to be raised at half-mast in honor of Romero, who was laid to rest on January 3.

Romero, on his third and final term as mayor and was running for 4th district board member under the Liberal Party in the May elections, collapsed after delivering a speech in a Christmas party in neighboring San Fabian.

The Romero family, through Rosalie Hulipas, administrative officer IV, did not confirm whether the late mayor’s son, Christopher Romero, will substitute for his father’s candidacy.

“It has been circulating but they will still be discussing that matter as a family,” Hulipas said.

Romero reportedly suffered from fatigue following a hectic schedule.

Hulipas recalled her last conversation with Romero where he said he was thinking about giving bonuses to the municipal employees, particularly the casuals and emergency workers, whom he said deserve something more for their hard work.

Meanwhile, Abalos confirmed that despite the passing of Romero, the local government will continue with the planned first ever Pindang Festival to be staged as part of the town fiesta on the first week of March.

Abalos said the promotion of the town’s well known product, Pindang or dried carabeef, is long overdue.–Hilda M. Austria
