3 arrested for cutting 50-year old Narra tree
ALAMINOS CITY—Three people were arrested by the police in Barangay Baleyadaan here last January 2 for cutting down a half a century old Narra tree.
Superintendent Armando Muena, police chief, identified the suspects as Gilbert Reynosa, 50, married, resident of the barangay, Gilbert Bain, 35, married, and Benjie Lalosin, 34, married, both residents of Barangay Patar in Mabini town.
A concerned citizen tipped off the police while the three were cutting down the Narra tree located inside Reynosa’s property.
Police officers were immediately sent to the site and asked the men to present their permit to cut and operate as required under Presidential Decree 705, the Revised Forestry Act of the Philippines.
Related regulations on cutting down trees are also contained in Republic Act No. 7586 (National Integrated Protected System Act) and Republic Act No. 9147 (Wildlife Act).
The group was able to show only a permit to operate.
The police confiscated from their possession one unit chain saw, 18 flitches of cut Narra tree in various sizes with an approximate volume of 60 board feet.—Eva Visperas
