SHELLFISH from the western waters of the province are again safe to eat as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 1 has declared four coastal areas there now red-tide free.

In an advisory dated December 26, BFAR Region 1 Director Nestor Domenden said the coastal waters of Alaminos City, Wawa in Bani town, Bolinao, and Anda are free from toxic red tides based on their most recent monitoring results.

These areas were declared affected by red tide last November 23 and harvesting and trading were temporarily banned.

At the same time, Domenden reiterated his advice to local government units to require market inspectors, quarantine officers, and administrators to demand an auxiliary invoice or clearance for any fish and seashells that are unloaded from other provinces and municipalities to ensure that seashells brought in the markets did not come from areas that are positive of paralytic shellfish poisoning.–Eva Visperas
