VILLASIS—Next year’s Talong Festival, celebrated in this town known as the Vegetable Bowl of Pangasinan, will have a new feature that aims to cultivate the creativity of the youth.

The new event, Mosaic Art Design Contest, will see the participation of elementary and high school students who will make art designs using eggplants, indigenous materials, agricultural seeds and bamboo materials.

The artwork entries must feature the culture of Villasis and will be judged on January 18 based on originality and creativity, clarity of the message, visual impact and neatness.

Mayor Dita Abrenica said the annual Cooking Pinakbet sa Kawa and Street Dancing, the most popular activities of the festival, will still be held as well as the other regular features.

The Pinakbet sa Kawa, also set January 18, is a community cooking event wherein each barangay prepares a huge pot of the popular vegetable dish pinakbet and everyone is welcome to partake.

On the same day still, students in colorful talong-inspired costumes will strut their numbers on the streets for the dancing competition.

Abrenica said the inauguration of the new Villasis Legislative Building on January 15 will signal the start of the festival.

The building, worth P4-million, was bankrolled by the fund collected in last year’s popularity contest for Mrs. Villasis during the town fiesta celebration.

The same fund enabled the town not only to construct the new municipal building, town park, municipal auditorium but purchase street lights, farm equipment and a multi-purpose gym.

This year’s town beauty pageant will no longer be a popularity/fund-raising event, but a beauty and brains competition for young Villasinians who will vie for the Miss Villasis 2013 crown on Jan. 19.–Eva Visperas
