PANGASINAN remains one the top three vote-rich provinces in the country.

The official number of registered voters in Pangasinan as approved by the Election Registration Board is 1,651,814.

Atty. Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor, said the number was finalized last week after representatives of the Information Technology Department and the Elections and Barangay Affairs Department made a final check of list of voters and the clustering of precincts.

The current number of voters expected to troop to the precincts for the May 2013 midterm election is almost 30,000 more than the 1,621,959 registered for the May 2010 polls.

Salas said about 80 percent of Pangasinan voters cast their vote in 2010 and he is optimistic that this number will be equaled or surpassed next year.

Salas said double or multiple registrations have been removed from the list based on their biometrics, retaining only the last area of enlistment of voter.

Also purged from the list were those who had died, those who failed to vote twice in two successive elections, and those who have transferred registration from Pangasinan to other places.

No data was released on the number of discovered “multiple” registrations.—Eva Visperas
