Mangaldan celebrates “pindang” with new festival
MANGALDAN—Pindang, thin slices of dried and cured carabao meat long been produced in this town, will now be celebrated with a special festival starting next year alongside the annual municipal fiesta in March.
The municipal government launched the Pindang Festival last December 10 with the unveiling of a giant tarpaulin at the town plaza announcing the activities for next year’s event.
Ajie Cabrera, executive assistant of Mayor Herminio Romero, said last week’s launch was just a dry-run and a grand launching is being planned for next year.
Locals have long been asking the government to have a special event for pindang, the municipal’s ‘One Town, One Product’, as a promotional tool to boost the industry.
Cabrera said pindang-making is a more than a hundred-year old industry in the town and the product has gained recognition not just among Pangasinenses but also people from neighboring provinces.
Families involved in pindang-making prepare the product through the traditional means of curing salted and seasoned carabeef strip directly under the sun.
Pindang can also be made using cow meat but carabao beef is preferred by producers because it is tastier and more tender.
The holding of the Pindang Festival is by virtue of a municipal council resolution sponsored by Liga ng mga Barangay municipal President Ritchie Abalos who is also the chair of the first festival celebration.–Eva Visperas
