Make merry but be healthy, says DOH

FATTY food, lack of proper sleep, and too much alcohol – which are common during the Christmas and New Year celebrations – can cause hypertension and the Department of Health has again warned the public to be cautious in their merrymaking.

Hypertension is a disease that pushes up blood pressure and can lead to a host of serious problems including, heart attacks and strokes.

Dr. Noel Manaois, staff coordinator at Region 1 Medical Center’s Health Emergency Management Section, said that the incidence of stroke and heart attack rises on these occasions because of the increase intake of fatty foods.

“We must be conscious to control our eating habits and to moderate the excessive intake of fatty food,” said Manaois.

Some of the symptoms of hypertension are headaches, particularly at the back of the head, dizziness, and at times, numbness of the face or one side of the body.

“We must recognize these symptoms as these are warning signs that there is something wrong,” he said during the Pantongtongan Tayo” radio program of the Philippine Information Agency last Tuesday.

Individuals experiencing these symptoms should stop whatever activity they are doing and rest by either lying down or sitting in their most comfortable position.

If the symptoms persists, consulting a doctor is advised.(PIA-Pangasinan/AMM)
