LNU, trounce PAMMA, two others post early wins

4th Jimmy Fernandez Cup

THE fourth season of the Jimmy Fernandez Cup Inter-Collegiate Invitational Men Basketball and Women Volleyball Tournaments reeled off last December 13 at the Stadia in Dagupan with ten schools participating.

City Vice-Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, director of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Region I, Inc., officially opened the tournament, which is named in honor of her late father.

In her message to the participants, Fernandez announced that plans are afoot for a program to train 9 –14 year old boys and girls by Junior NBA coaches and trainers and prepare them for competitions within the Asian region.

Some 1,500 young athletes will be accommodated in the program.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, president of the Lyceum-Northwestern University (LNU) and the National PRISAA and Region I, extolled the virtues of the late Jimmy Fernandez and acknowledged the vice-mayor’s initiatives to promote sports in Dagupan City.

GAME RESULTS

The opening featured a triple-header with the first game won by Tarlac State University (TSU) squad over the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial state University (DMMMSU) quintet, 104-76.

In the second game, Calasiao-based Philippine College of Science and Technology (PCST) Topnotch downed Malasique-domiciled Perpetual Help College of Pangasinan (PHCP) Saints, 194-59.

In the main game, the LNU Dukes displayed their championship caliber as they vanquished defending champion Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA) Sea Warriors, 77-62.

The other schools participating in the tournament are University of Pangasinan (UPang-PHINMA) Flames, Asia Institute of E-Commerce (AIE) Golden Eagle, University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, and PIMSAT Colleges. They are yet to play in January, next year.

As in past seasons, the champions in the these tournaments will represent Region I in Women’s and Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball and Volleyball Championship set on March 11-14 next year in Davao City.

The tournaments, which will be occasionally televised live through Kabaleyan Channel 17, is supported by the CSI Group of Companies, USATV, Stadia, and BAP Region I.—Philamer C. Celi
