Letter from the SENATE
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Pangasinan –
Last week, we wrapped up our work at the Senate for the year. We managed to beat our self-imposed deadline to pass our version of the Sin Tax and Reproductive Health bills in spite of recriminations and emotional debates among the legislators.
Both bills as adopted are admittedly far from perfect but the needs of our people are urgent. We had to act to safeguard the health of our people balancing it with the livelihood of tobacco farmers. We had to address the problems posed by unplanned pregnancies and the health risks to mothers and children while helping families cope with their future, never forgetting for a moment that abortion is not an option.
On the bill institutionalizing the K to 12 education system, I have manifested my support with the introduction of 3 major amendments to the bill. The amendments were crafted to ensure that the quality education promised by the government will be delivered and that parents, particularly the poor among us, will not end up feeling shortchanged by the system.
More work is at hand. Meanwhile, let us all pause to celebrate the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ and the love and blessings He gave our families through the years.
Merry Christmas po sa inyong lahat!
Sincerely,
Alan
