JV Ejercito defends “dynasty” tag
GOOD VS. BAD
LINGAYEN—San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, a senatorial candidate in the May 2013 elections who was in town last week for a city fiesta, said not all political dynasties are bad as long as the democratic process is still observed.
Ejercito is one of the sons of former President Joseph Estrada, who is running as mayor of Manila; his mother Guia Gomez is mayor of San Juan; and his half brother Jinggoy Estrada is a senator.
Ejercito said there is nothing wrong with a political dynasty as long as it is anchored on what he called “3 Ks”, which stands for kinagisnan, kakayanan and kapalaran.
“Bad dynasty is bad if you use coercion, intimidation, guns, goons and gold to get your members of your family elected…good dynasty is if you have good performance, (you) just market yourself…using your platform, accomplishment as a public servant,” he said.
He explained that kinagisnan means children are raised and exposed to a certain profession or environment — such as doctors, lawyers, or politicians – and thus have the inclination to pursue the same field.
Kakayanan, meanwhile, refers to the credentials of the candidate and not just the family name.
“I think having the name is an advantage but that is not enough (because) you have to show credentials, performance, track record…Di naman ako tatakbo dito sa pagkasenador kung ang puhunan ko ay pangalan lang ng tatay ko,” Ejercito said.
Kapalaran connotes leaving one’s political fate to the people.
“We are in a democracy, if they think we belong to good dynasty, they will most likely vote for you but if they think you belong to bad dynasty, they won’t vote for you,” Ejercito said. — Eva Visperas
