Home composting launched in Dagupan
AN “Easy Home Composting” program was launched in Sitio Longos, Barangay Bonuan Boquig last week as part of efforts to minimize household waste in Dagupan City, which has long been facing garbage management problems.
Councilor Jeslito Seen, brainchild of the project, said based on his policy paper submitted to the University of Makati, the home composting program is an urban concept of segregation wherein wastes that can be turned into fertilizer would be placed in plastic containers in every household for 30 days.
Seen assured that the system would not emit foul odor since incense will be mixed in the compost that he and barangay council will provide.
The Rotary Club of Central Pangasinan, meanwhile, will provide seedlings to the households to be planted and fertilized by the composted wastes.
Seen said these, in turn, can eventually be used for food production in the backyards within the barangay.
Seen earlier also spearheaded the Plastik Mo, Bigas Ko, Palit Tayo project, which ended last November 17.
The project collected 226 kilos of plastic wastes and an equivalent number of kilos of rice were given to the people in exchange for the plastic wastes.—Eva Visperas
