GM Gomez tops open chess tourney; Pangasinan’s Pascua 2nd

LINGAYEN—International Grandmaster John Paul Gomez bagged the 4th Amado T. Espino Jr. Open Chess Cup title last week held here.

Pangasinan’s FIDE Master Haridas Pascua also collected six points from a total seven rounds, but had to concede for second place with a lower tiebreak score.

Gomez, who hails from Laguna City, was undefeated in the strong 94-field tournament that was participated in by nine national masters (NM), two FIDE masters (FM) and two international masters (IM), and two grandmasters (GM)

The champion received P20,000 while the second placer, P10,000.

NM Raymond Salcedo took third place with six points, while IM Ronald Dableo, GM Darwin Laylo, NM Nelson Mariano III, NM Alcon Datu, IM Chito Garma and NM Ronald Llavanes tied for fourth to ninth place with 5.5 points each.

Pangasinan’s Dick Gicain was in 10th place with five points.

Special awards were given to Gicain as the tournament’s top senior player; Pascua and country’s youngest NM Giovanni Mejia as top junior players; Jan Jodilyn Fronda Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia and Mary Joy Roca as top lady players.

Pascua and Gicain, along with Gerard Lalas, also took the top local player awards.

JUNIORS

In the lower age brackets, San Fabian’s Brylle Gever Vinluan won the under-14 category while Danever James Ubando, the under-10 category.

Vinluan took the title by scoring six points, half a point ahead of Juan Carlos Presente, and a point ahead of Artrino Paul Fortin, Jerome Junio and Jan Marx Anastacio.

Ubando, a resident of Dagupan City, scored six points along with John Ruiz Bravo, who took the second place, based on lower tiebreak score.

The tournament was organized by the Pangasinan Chess League, formerly known as Pangasinan Chess Federation, and sponsored by the provincial government. (PIA-Pangasinan/ARF)
