SOME 35 boats artfully adorned joined the fluvial parade contest in honor of Dagupan City’s patron St. John the Evangelist.

On the afternoon of the Feast Day of the fisherfolk saint, the boats cruised from the Star Plaza Hotel dock and ended at the Babaliwan in Poblacion Oeste.

A procession led by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas and Mayor Benjamin S. Lim then commenced from the quay to the St. John Metropolitan Cathedral for the awarding ceremony for the contest.

Winner of the grand prize was Boat No. 35 from Barangay Pantal, registered by Agusto Biliran who took home a P15,000 cash prize for his lifelike version of the patron steering the boat.

Boat No. 34, entered by Bentot Fernandez Jr., placed second while Boat No. 33
of Dominador Alcantara was third. Both entries are from Barangay Calmay.

Criteria for the competition were relevance to the life of St. John the Fisherman and Evangelist, 30 percent; creativity, 30 percent; originality, 25 percent; and overall impact, 15 percent.

The panel of judges was composed of City Agriculturist Emma Molina, One-Stop Business Center chief Carmen Olpindo and Executive Assistant III Deborah Castillo for the city government and two lay leaders from the archdiocese.

Villegas said the event is the archdiocese and the city’s way of honoring the city’s
patron, a fisherman.

The event was part of this year’s City Fiesta celebration. (CIO)
