Fishkill harvest seized, 5 people arrested
ALAMINOS CITY—Five people were arrested by authorities at the Suki Market here after they were found selling bangus affected by fishkill, which is unsafe for human consumption.
More than 750 kilograms of bangus believed to have come from fishkill areas in the island municipality of Anda were confiscated by combined elements of the police, Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the City Agriculture Office last December 26 at around 4:20 p.m.
The five people arrested were identified as Angelita Camba who had a supply of 452 kilos of bangus; Mario Camaso, 240 kilos; Maricel Ranit, 13 kilos; Evelyn Rangel, 6.8 kilos; and Luzviminda Pula, 2.5 kilos.
Their arrest is for violation of Republic Act 7394, the Consumers Act of the Philippines.
The confiscated bangus were discarded to the waste disposal area of Barangay Dulacac here.
Retired Lieutenant Genaro Bacala, POSO chief, assured Mayor Hernani Braganza in his report on the incident that they are continuously checking all vehicles coming from Anda, Agno and Bolinao at a checkpoint in Barangay Inerangan.
The city’s acting police chief Armando Muena, in a separate report to the Pangasinan Police Office, said following the seizure, 43 fish delivery trucks had been inspected for possible hauling of bangus from fishkill areas.—Eva Visperas
