LINGAYEN—Just a week after a new police chief was assigned in Pangasinan, yet another has been appointed effective December 26 and it is possible he could be out again by January.

Senior Superintendent Marlou Chan, a native of San Quintin town, has been named officer-in-charge (OIC) police provincial director, replacing Senior Superintendent Manolito Labador, who was concurrently deputy regional director for operations in Region.

Chan has just vacated his post as chief of Ilocos Norte where he was assigned for more than two years.

Labador, meanwhile, has been assigned as OIC police director in Ilocos Norte vice the post left by Chan.

Chief Superintendent Franklin Jesus Bucayu, police regional director of Region 1, said he hopes Chan would stay longer now in Pangasinan as Labador was really placed to avoid a vacuum in the police leadership in the province.

But Bucayu announced at the same time that another shake up among provincial directors in Region 1 is likely to happen in January.

Labador replaced Senior Superintendent Mariano Luis Verzosa Jr. as OIC police director after the latter was relieved from his five-month posting following an order from Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas.

Roxas ordered the relief of police chiefs in Pangasinan after Bugallon Mayor Rodrigo Orduña made allegations that Governor Amado Espino Jr. received jueteng money.

Espino has denied the accusation and a case is now pending before the Office of the Ombudsman.

However, official word from the police say Verzosa’s relief is intended to avoid partisan politics as his daughter is running for re-election as a councilor in the capital town of Lingayen.–Eva Visperas
