Bikers pedal against drugs

AMATEUR bike riders joined the Padyak Kontra Droga event last November 28 in support of the anti-drug advocacy of the government.

The ride, participated in by more than 40 bikers, traversed the length of Bonuan Binloc highway starting from the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC)-Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, passing through Arellano St., A.B. Fernandez Ave., De Venecia Highway, Lucao, Malta Road, Malued District, Perez Blvd., and ending back at the R1MC hospital.

Raymund Basbas, rehabilitation center program head, said the activity was part of the awareness campaign of the Department of Health and R1MC against the use of illegal drugs.

The bike run was also in line with the observance of Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week.

As Basbas warned the public against the psychological, mental and physical risks of drug abuse, he also advised police officers handling cases involving drug users to refer suspects to accredited rehabilitation centers.

Most cases are dropped because of improper assessment of drug suspects, Basbas noted.

The rehabilitation center, he acknowledged, at present cannot issue assessment papers for legal purposes, but he assured that the institution will strive to secure the accreditation needed to do it. (PIA-Pangasinan/ARF)
