STUDENTS of the Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS) emerged champions in the recently- concluded Philippine Nuclear Science Quiz-Elimination Round for Region I held in La Union.

The team of Pauline Joy Roa and Sharmaine Elaydo, with Coach Marites Estepa, bested 15 other competing schools.

Coming in second was the Christ the King College (High School Department) in San Fernando City team of Dan Carlo Macayan and Wilhelmsen Palmes, coached by Flordeliza Viloria.

Both winning teams will represent Region I in the forthcoming Quarter Final Round to be held at the Science Discovery Center, SM Mall of Asia on December 13.

Winners in the quarter final round will advance to the semi-final to be held on the same day.

Engr. Felipe Andrada, provincial director of the Department of Science and Technology in western and Central Pangasinan, said it was the first time the Nuclear Science Quiz was conducted by the DOST- Philippine Nuclear Research Institute in the regions outside the capital.

“There used to be quizzes on Math, Science and Physics but it’s the first time to have a quiz on Nuclear Science,” he added.

DOST Regional Director Elsa Chan, in a letter, said the competition is in line with the celebration of the 40th Atomic Energy Week with the theme “Nuclear Science Technology and Innovation: Engine for Growth and Development.”

Chan said the activities aim to develop the interest of the youth in nuclear science and enhance awareness and understanding on nuclear science and technology and its beneficial applications. (PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
