Urdaneta agrees to take 10% of Baguio’s waste
URDANETA CITY—The local government here has agreed to take in 20 tons out of the 200-ton daily garbage collection of Baguio City for disposal at the modern engineered sanitary landfill in Barangay Catablan here.
Engr. Marjorie dela Cruz, head of the landfill, said the garbage from Baguio will be in addition to the current 70 tons being dumped here with corresponding fees by other neighboring localities.
She said the volume for paid dumping could be increased once additional machines are delivered by the supplier.
Dela Cruz said the agreement for Baguio’s waste is with a private contractor that has already been bringing in garbage at the landfill from other areas since early this year.
The contractor is charged P900 per ton of garbage.
The Irisan dumpsite in Baguio City was ordered closed last year by a court following a tragic trash-slide that killed five people.
At that time, Urdaneta Mayor Amadeo Gregory Perez IV allowed Baguio to bring in its garbage in Urdaneta for a couple of days as an interim solution to the situation.
However, residents here raised an alarm over the report, fearing that Baguio, which has long been faced with waste management problems, might start bringing in too much of its garbage.
