BARATILLOS GALORE

GRIDLOCK in the streets of Dagupan are again a common scene since Thursday with the construction of stalls on Galvan and Jovellanos Streets where a baratillo will be held for two months in connection with the Dagupan City Fiesta in December.

Jeepney and tricycle drivers are the first to complain about the jams that they say affect their daily livelihood.

Sana wala nang baratillo,” said one jeepney driver from Bonuan who questioned the closing of Galvan Street to accommodate stalls for out-of-town traders.

The fiesta executive committee decided to put up a baratillo as a fund raising activity for the city fiesta that will officially begin Dec. 15 and end December 30.

Each stall is reportedly priced at P50,000 as rental fee for the two-month period, which will extend beyond the fiesta period.

East-bound jeepneys heading to Bonuan and the barangays of Tambac, Tebeng, Mangin, Salisay and Mamalingling have been temporarily re-directed by the Public Order and Safety Office to Zamora Street.

But this route is again expected to be change as Zamora Street is the permanent location of the fiesta’s Food Strip where night eateries serving noodles and snacks will be located.

Naaawa ko sa mga Bonuan drivers dahil tuwing ikot nila sa down area, tatlo lang ang kanilang pasahero. Paano sila mabubuhay niyan,” said one passenger.

Dapat ang city hall tignan naman ang kapakanan namin. Malapt na ang eleksiyon,” a disgruntled driver said.

Drivers, however, are not optimistic that city hall officials will reconsider plans for their sake.
