BANI— A P345 million water impounding dam that will irrigate some 600 hectares of farmland will be inaugurated on December 7 in this western Pangasinan town.

Mayor Marcelo Navarro Jr. said the inauguration, which will be attended by Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala on behalf of President Benigno Aquino III, has been scheduled even if the irrigation canals of the projects are still to be finished in 45 days.

Once completed, the project located in the upland barangay of Ranao, will be able to irrigate rice lands in eight barangays of the town.

The dam will store water collected from the different watersheds of Bani for distribution to the farmlands during the dry season.

Noting that most people in the town depend on agriculture for livelihood, Navarro said the local government pushed for a dam to help farmers continue planting rice and other crops even during dry season.

Construction started in 2011 with the help of the National Irrigation Administration.

Navarro thanked the President for the construction of the project, which is funded from the Department of Agriculture (DA) under the General Appropriations Act (GAA).
