Joyland School dominates chess tourney
THE Ablang siblings of Joyland School in San Fabian took top honors in the in an Inter-school Chess Tournament participated in by elementary and secondary students in the province last October 27.
Winning the boy’s division in the elementary category of the competition organized by the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Pangasinan Chapter and the Department of Education (DepEd), was Charles Darwin Ablang took the title with perfect score, ahead of 2nd to 5th placers Danever James Ubando (BLISS Elementary School), Aloysius Garcia (Mamalingling Elementary School), Jerson Tambot (East Central Integrated School) and Alberto Delos Reyes (Salapingao Elementary School).
Ablang’s elder sister Danica Alexis, also of Joyland, dominated the elementary girl’s division with a similar score, ahead of 2nd to 6th placers Gienevive Casiquin (East Central), Cherry Rose Bascos (Joyland), Ivy Gail Quitlong (BLISS), Hannah Kathleen Apeta (St. John’s Cathedral Elementary School) and Rizzel Aparacio (Pantal Elementary School).
In the secondary level, seasoned campaigner Fernando Mendoza of Dagupan City National High School-Special Science Class (DCNHS-SSC) added another title to his list by winning the high school boy’s division with perfect score.
A point behind him and tied for 2nd to 3rd place were Johnny Rufino Jr. (Judge Jose De Venecia Sr. Memorial National High School) and Allan Frianeza (Bonuan Boquig National High School).
Robilene Peroche from Francisco Q. Duque Medical Foundation Special Science High School took the high school girl’s division title after conceding a draw in the second round, half a point ahead of Ivy Philine Arzadon (St. John) and Sharina Claveria (DCNHS) who tied for 2nd to 3rd place.
Joyland School took the championship in both the elementary girl’s and boy’s division, while Bonuan Boquig National High School and St. John School took the same in the boy’s division and girl’s division high school categories, respectively. (PIA-Pangasinan/ARF)
