Flag-on-casket honor sought by teachers
LINGAYEN—The Federation of Public Elementary School Teachers Association of Pangasinan 1 composed of 31 districts has asked Gov. Amado Espino Jr. to give departed teachers the honor of having a flag over their casket.
“Teachers assigned to different districts are rendering their services wholeheartedly for the benefit of school children in their own community,” states the resolution passed by the federation led by its president Macario Soriano last month and forwarded Monday by Espino to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to review the legality of the request.
The group cited Republic Act No. 8491, “An Act Prescribing the Code of National Flag, Anthem, Motto, Coat-of-Arms and Other Heroic Items and Devices of the Philippines”, as its basis.
Section 24 of this Act says, “The flag may be used to cover the caskets of the honored dead of the military, veterans of previous wars, national artists and of civilians who have rendered distinguished service to the nation, as may be determined by the local government unit concerned.”—Eva Visperas
