4th Jimmy Fernandez Cup opens Dec. 5
THE 4th Season of the Jimmy Fernandez Cup Invitational Basketball Championship under the auspices of the Federation of Schools Sports Associations of the Philippines (FESSAP) and Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (MNCAA) will reel off on December 5 at the Stadia in Dagupan City with 10 teams from Pangasinan and from La Union participating.
Schools invited to see action this year are: Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA), the defending champion; Asia Institute of E-Commerce College (AIE-C); Colegio de Dagupan (CdD), PIMSAT Colleges (PIMSAT); Pangasinan State University (PSU-Lingayen, Pangasinan); Don Mariano Marcos State University (DMMST-Agoo, La Union); University of Luzon, University of Pangasinan-PHINMA; Perpetual Help University System (PHUS-Malasique, Pangasinan) and Philippine College of Science and Technology (PCST-Calasiao, Pangnasinan).
Named in honor of the late father of Dagupan Vice-Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, the tournament this year will have a new format with two brackets, namely: 1) Seeded Teams, and 2) Non-Seeded Teams or Handicap Teams.
In the elimination round, all participating teams in each bracket will play in a single round robin series with the top four teams in each bracket advancing to the semi-final round where the top two teams in each bracket earning the twice-to-beat incentive.
In each bracket in the semi-final round the top team faces the 4th placer while the 2nd team meets the 3rd team.
The winners will clash for the championship while the losers will fight in a knockout game for third place.
The champion in each bracket will battle for the championship crown in a best-of-three game series. The second placers in each bracket will fight for third place in a knockout game.
The champions will represent its team and Region I in the FESSAP-MNCAA Basketball Championships set March 2013 in Davao City.
Seato A. Gonimil, FESSAP Deputy Secretary-General for Luzon and MNCAA Region I Director, said the tournament will be conducted by a management committee of five technical persons under the supervision of a Board of Governors to be elected in November.
The tournament is supported by the vice mayor, CSI Group of Companies, USATV, The Stadia, and the Basketball Association of the Philippines-Region I, Inc.–Philamer C. Celi
