THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-Region I recently gave a P300,000 financial assistance to the University of Pangasinan’s (UPang) Faculty Union for its rice trading and distribution program.

“The assistance came from DOLE’s Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), which provides productive, gainful and secure employment to marginalized and unprotected workers,” said DOLE Regional Director Grace Ursua.

The DILP aims to enhance the existing livelihood of self-employed workers in the informal economy, engage unemployed workers in livelihood undertakings, assist the rank and file wage workers in collective enterprise to augment their income, or restore the lost livelihood resources of workers who have been affected by natural calamities and disasters.

UPang Faculty Union (UPFU) president Joseph Jovellanos said in gratitude to DOLE’s grant, the group vows to maintain and improve its livelihood program.

“It (rice trading and distribution program) will facilitate the regular supply of rice on credit, payable through payroll deduction, to ensure affordable yet quality rice for the union members and their families,” Jovellanos said. (PIA-Pangasinan/AMM)
