School- on-wheels to bring computer education to the barangays

REPRESENTATIVE Gina de Venecia is revolutionizing computer learning with the innovative Computer-on-Wheels program to bring computer education right at the doorsteps of the out-of-school and the differently-abled young people in Pangasinan’s 4th District.
“In most businesses, the use of a computer is a standard, and it is to the best interest of the young people to start off computer literate,” she said, adding that the project aims to help the marginalized young people, the out-of-school youths and the differently-abled, who cannot even afford travel allowance to attend vocational schools.
“Dadalhin ko na ang libreng edukasyon sa kanila because poverty and physical handicap shouldn’t be deterrents to basic education,”she added.
Under the program, the mobile computer laboratory, equipped with 20 computer units and other peripherals like scanners and printers will be deployed to serve the 140 barangays of Dagupan City, Mangaldan, San Jacinto, San Fabian, Manaoag, and San Fabian.
The computer lab will stay in one barangay for thirty days to enable the students enough time to finish the intensive TESDA-approved courses on Basic Application Software, Computer Secretarial, Basic PC Repairs and Desktop publishing.
After the training, the graduates will be given formal certificates of completion, which they can use for their job application.
Providing educational scholarships is one of the banner programs of De Venecia.
At present, she is sending 414 scholars to college and other vocational institutions. The De Venecia Scholarship Program, which started during the 1970s has already sent more than 12,000 deserving young students to college.
