THE filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) in Dagupan CIity yesterday was uneventful until someone in Comelec noticed late afternoon that there were two “Belen T. Fernandez” that filed for the mayoralty post.
It turned out that the “new” candidate was a 66-year old woman named Belen Fernandez from Bonuan Gueset.
When the camp of Vice Mayor Belen was alerted, the woman was located and she reportedly volunteered the information about the circumstances that made her file. Sketchy initial reports indicate she was brought to the Comelec by an ex-barangay kagawad whose name is momentarily being withheld, to register after she allegedly agreed to the terms of Mayor Benjie Lim whom she met. She said she was given P500 initially then another P1,500 with the promise to give her son a motorcycle and new house for them in exchange for her filing.
Today, the “fake” candidate executed an affidavit withdrawing her COC this afternoon with the help of Attys. Farah Decano, Vicky Cabrera, Joey Tamayo and Teddy Manaois. The vice mayor’s camp is contemplating on filing charges against those who plotted to make a mockery of the electoral process with the intent of marginalizing the mayoralty bid of VM Fernandez.
