Kids attend 2nd Children’s Congress
NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MONTH
SOME 20,000 children from public and private schools in Dagupan converged at the CSI Stadia for the 2012 Dagupan Children’s Congress sponsored by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the CSI Group of Companies.
City Schools Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio welcomed the participants and their parents and guardians in the three-day Congress where the Division of City Schools is holding its festival of talents and skills and academic Olympics.
Winners will represent the Dagupan division in the regional competition slated in December in San Fernando City, La Union and in the national competition scheduled in summer next year.
Dr. Teresita Velasco, DepEd Regional Director, lauded the event, with this year’s theme “Inspiring the Children to Make a Difference” and is part of the city’s celebration of Children’s Month.
Top feature during the opening day was the launching of the program “From Wrappers to Pavers”, a recycling program of Unilever Philippines.
Vice Mayor Fernandez, also chair of her family-owned CSI Group, invited Unilever to showcase its technology and enlist the help of students in collecting wrappers and sachets in their homes and schools that could be converted into pavers.
Pavers, made from cement and sand mixed with ground wrappers and sachets, are solid materials which can be used as pathways in communities that are usually flooded during the rainy season.
Fernandez said she intends to purchase a similar machine for Dagupan City soon so that the people can make their own pavers instead of bringing the wrappers to Manila. Pangasinan joins the country in observing National Children’s Month, with this year’s theme focusing on the promotion of freedom of expression among children.
CAPITOL CELEBERATION
Meanwhile, Myrna Celeste, Project Evaluation Officer II of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), said activities lined up highlight the rights of children to seek, receive and impart information or ideas.
The celebration, with the slogan “Bright Child ay Siguraduhin, Responsableng Pamamahayag ay Palaganapi”, aims to encourage children to participate in public activities, added Celeste.
The PSWDO, through the Provincial Federation of Day Care Workers, will conduct “balitang bulilit” and speech choir for day care children while a photo contest is set for day care workers and the elementary pupils in Lingayen town. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
