Baraan to campus editors: Be open-minded
LINGAYEN–Provincial Administrator Rafael F. Baraan has appealed to the members of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP)-Luzon Chapter to have a “better appreciation” of the various government projects, be more “open-minded,” and refrain from being “one-sided”.
Baraan spoke before the campus journalists during the annual Luzon-wide journalism skills training and workshop of CEGP from October 22 to 26 at the Dagupan City Water District Training Center.
On the third day of the CEGP forum, where topics centered on national and regional situations, Baraan said the provincial government is focused on various development projects that will fast-track progress for Pangasinan.
Baraan said that the present administration has set its sights in making Pangasinan an “investment and tourism destination” with the realization of the eco-tourism zone located at Barangays Sabangan, Malimpuec, Estanza and Capandan in Lingayen where the CEGP members conducted an on-site visitation as part of their itinerary.
The provincial administrator disclosed that despite opposition from their detractors, the present administration is being fully transparent.
“Wala kaming itinatago sa project na ‘yan. In fact, we allow the public to see what is going on. ‘Yong sinasabi nilang black sand na ini-extract nandoon, hindi namin itinatago because we exercise transparency in everything that we do. Sana makita nila na malinis ang intensyon namin,” Baraan said.
The five-day workshop, participated in by some 200 campus journalists coming from different universities in Luzon (including the National Capital Region), covered classroom discussions which focused on various topics such as: Understanding the Marginalized Sectors with sub-topics like health, migrants, women and children, peasant, indigenous and fisher-folks.
Classroom discussion on journalism skills training, on the other hand, highlighted editorial and opinion writing, news writing, features writing, graphics and layout, basic photography, ethics of journalism and campus paper management.
Discussions on Philippine Education System, Anatomy of Philippine Politics, and Campus Press Freedom were also included as among the subject highlights. (PIO/Ruby R. Bernardino)
