DEFENDING champion University of Pangasinan-PHINMA (UPang) Flames and back-to-back PRISAA champion Lyceum-Northwestern University Dukes posted early leads in the newly-opened 5th PCCL (Philippine Collegiate Championship League)-UCAAP (Universities and Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan) Basketball Championship.

The Flames and the Dukes registered 2-0 and 1-0 win-loss cards, respectively, in the overall team standing as of last week.

In opening games last September 10 at the People’s Astrodome, the Flames subdued University of Luzon Golden Tigers, 101-75, and went on to salvage a win by forfeiture as the Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA) Sea Lions came to the game at the DWAD Gym not wearing the prescribed uniform.

Meanwhile, the Dukes, for their opening day assignment subdued the offensive thrusts of the PAMMA Sea Lions, 86-72. It was a fierce battle between the two prized teams throughout the first periods, but the Dukes prevailed by employing man-to-man defense tactics causing the Perez Boulevard-based Sea Lions to commit errors and turnovers.

In their collision last Thursday, the UL Golden Tigers mesmerized debuting Asian Institute of Economics College (AIE) Golden Eagles, 111-60, to notch their first win in two games while the latter stands winless, with one loss.

The tournament, scheduled every Monday and Thursday, is a follow-through of the recently concluded PRISAA cagefest. Only five teams signed up to participate as others claimed to have conflicts of schedule with other tournaments elsewhere.

The champion in this tournament will represent PCCL Pangasinan Chapter in the PCCL North-Central Luzon Eliminations set in San Fernando City, La Union on November 3-6, where the winner will advance to the Zonal Eliminations in Manila, also in November.—Philamer C. Celi
