THE University of Pangasinan-PHINMA (UPang) Flames and Lyceum-Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes bolstered their title bids by vanquishing their respective rivals and have remained unbeaten in the ongoing 5th PCCL (Philippine Collegiate Champions League) – UCAAP (Universities and Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan) Basketball Championship in matches held last Tuesday at the Peoples Astrodome.

In the second game of the triple-header, defending champions the Flames plastered Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) Blue Stallions, 94-78, while the LNU Dukes thumped Asian Institute of E-Commerce College (AIE) Golden Eagles, 99-66, in the first game.

Not to be outdone in the third game, the Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA) Sea Lions, still nursing a loss by forfeiture last week, bounced back and outlasted University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, 59-57, in their own battle. The Sea Lions capitalized on the Golden Tigers’ errors and faulty shots from the free throw line at crunch time in the fourth period to seal the victory and fortified their hope for a spot in the top four.

The tournament which is supported by the BAP (Basketball Association of the Philippines) Region I, Inc. and PRISAA Region I, has six (6) teams participating with the late entry of the CdD Blue Stallions.

The win-loss cards of the teams so far are: 1. Upang-PHINMA, 3-0; 2. LNU, 2-0; 3. PAMMA, 1-2; 4. UL, 1-2; 5. CdD. 0-1; and 6. AIE, 0-2.

Games resume on Monday, September 24, at 1 p.m. at the Peoples Astrodome.

The champion in this tournament will represent PCCL Pangasinan Chapter in the PCCL North-Central Luzon Eliminations to be staged in San Fernando City, La Union on November 3-6, where the winner will advance to the Zonal Eliminations, also in November, in Manila.—Philamer C. Celi
