Team Pangasinan wins championship

LINGAYENThe Pangasinan volleybelles, aged 15 and below, trounced Rizal team, 3-2, and bagged the Batang Pinoy national volleyball championship after the final 5-set games played in Marikina City recently.

The Pangasinan team advanced to the finals after a sweep of the series early on in the eliminations, slamming Mandaluyong City, Pasay City, Quezon City, Kidapawan City (North Cotabato) and Rizal, bowing only to the Makati contingent.

The members of the champion team are: Marie Dominic Ventayen, Daisy Marie Manuel, Melva Basilio, Maria Nieza Viray, Maria Jezielle Viray, Trisha Mae Paras, Jasmin Ocado, Aillen Catacutan, Janielle Sison, Maybelle Casareno, Leslie Rosario and Celynne Tayaba.

Paras was chosen as Best Blocker and final’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while Viray was Best Server.

Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades (PSAT) teacher Abraham Bautista was awarded as Best Coach. Alberto Domingo of Rosales National High School is the team’s Assistant Coach.

The top four teams composed of Makati City (6-0), Pangasinan (5-1), Pasay City (4-2) and Rizal (3-3) advanced to the semis where Makati lost to Rizal in a tight match, thus forging a rubber match with Pangasinan, which earlier beat Pasay, for the championship.

Rizal team racked up the first two sets, but the Pangasinan spikers rallied in the third fourth and fifth sets to finally seal the victory, 3-2. A come from behind victory for Pangasinan was scored after putting away a margin of 6 points (9-15) from Rizal in set (5).

Makati’s volleybelles landed in the third place while Pasay was in the fourth spot.

Executive Assistant III Modesto Operania said the strong participation of the local government units (LGUs) and the Department of Education-Pangasinan as represented by the schools divisions during the Pangasinan elimination games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center contributed to the victory into winning the championship game.

The Batang Pinoy Northern Luzon Regional Leg will be held in Pangasinan, but the volleyball games for girls will no longer be included as its national championship round was already held in Marikina. (PIO)
