Dagupan tightens meat inspection
THE Dagupan City veterinary office has been ordered by the office of the city mayor to continuously conduct rigid meat inspections in the market and monitor proper meat handling among vendors.
Mayor Benjamin Lim issued the directive after 400 kilos of imported meat were seized from five vendors in Malimgas Market for violation of the guidelines on proper handling of meat products.
“Despite several meetings conducted by the city veterinary office, the vendors still failed to properly handle their meat products,” said city veterinarian in-charge Dr. Michael Maramba
The city government also plans to introduce a licensing policy for butchers, requiring meat vendors to avail of a blue card issued by the city health office, monitor expiry date of manufactured meat products and close monitoring of meat handlers by vendors.
Penalties for erring vendors include confiscation of products, issuance of notice of final warning and possible revocation of licenses for repeated offenses.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE
In a related development, Maramba also announced the city’s plan to build its own abattoir.
“It would be beneficial for the city to build its own abattoir as a hundred percent revenue-generating facility which operation can help increase the income of the city,” Maramba.
Aside from the income, the construction and eventual operation of the city’s slaughterhouse will also provide jobs for Dagupenos, he added.
The planned site of the project is the old slaughterhouse in Barangay Tebeng. (CIO)
