Cornhusk basket-making seminar held in San Jacinto

A THREE-day seminar on basket weaving was conducted in San Jacinto last week for livelihood development and as part of the town’s waste management program.

The Bayong and Corn Husk Development Project provided skills training on production, costing and marketing of baskets made from cornhusks, which is abundant in the municipality.

“The seminar seeks to equip people the knowledge and skills they need. It’s up to us how we will use the training to help ourselves and educate others as well,” said Sixto Aquino, president of the San Jacinto Livelihood Organization, the beneficiary of the project.

Aquino added that the project also helps the municipality in its waste management and flood prevention measures as the use of corn husks as well as rice and banana stalks for basket products minimizes plant wastes.

The seminar was organized by the local government under Mayor Robert O. De Vera, in partnership with Rep. Gina De Venecia, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Pangasinan and a non-government organization.

The DTI will assist in marketing the finished products.--Jane Diaz,UPang
