Construction of P20M protective wall to save seafood plant starts

FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia has announced that the construction of the retaining wall to save the Dagupan Seafood Processing Plant and Sitio Puntok in Bonuan Binloc from massive soil erosion due to flooding of Cayanga River will start Monday.
The construction of the protective wall, worth P20 million, has become De Venecia’s priority, after seeing first-hand that the seafood facility is indeed only a few meters away from the eroded area, along the western bank of the Cayanga River.
During her personal visit to the site, she likewise learned that the perennial flooding of the river due to typhoons had also eroded a sizable portion of Sitio Puntok.
After assessing the damage, De Venecia immediately asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast-track the construction of the retaining wall.
After successful bidding, District Engineer Rodolfo Dion of DPWH has informed De Venecia that its construction will begin Sept. 17.
De Venecia first learned of the said damage through a Dagupan City resolution authored by Councilor Jeslito Seen, who had sought her assistance to construct a retaining wall along the western bank of the river. Former Councilman Julius Alcaide of Bonuan Binloc also reported that the Cayanga river floods, spawned by typhoons, had also swallowed hectares of land in Sitio Puntok.
SEAFOOD PLANT BACK ON TRACK
Meanwhile, the lawmaker has expressed satisfaction over the settlement of the seafood plant’s management row. She said that Mayor Benjie Lim’s constant threat to take over its management had gravely hampered the seafood’s operation.
“Now that BFAR is established as the plant’s custodian, Dr. Westly Rosario as manager can now effectively run the facility, and make long-term plans for the benefit of the small fisherfolks and fishpond operators of the city and nearby towns,” said De Venecia.
Dr. Rosario agrees saying, “Nag-alangan yung mga dati naming kausap kasi hindi sila sigurado na magagamit nila ang planta na pang long-term. They’re also worried na baka tumaas ang singil once iba na ang management.”
