Caramat stays as Dagupan police chief
WITHOUT a clearance from the Police Regional Office (PRO), Superintendent Noel Vallo did not show up last September 3 at the scheduled turnover of command from outgoing police chief, Superintendent Romeo Caramat Jr., who is set to take a study leave.
OIC Pangasinan Police Director Senior Superintendent Mariano Luis Verzosa confirmed that “Vallo had no clearance given by the Police Regional Office.”
Mayor Benjamin S. Lim, who scheduled the turnover ceremony in front of the Dagupan City Police Station, handpicked Vallo to replace Caramat but the PRO did not agree.
The PRO, reportedly wants Superintendent Christopher Abrahano, who is presently assigned at Camp Oscar Florendo in San Fernando City, La Union, to take over the Dagupan post.
Lim tired to invoke his prerogative as the city’s chief executive as provided under the Philippine National Police Law but this apparently was not welcomed by the PRO.
Verzosa added that Vallo has not “winded up his activities as chief of police of Calasiao”.
City hall observers believe that Abrahano, a native of Sta. Barbara town, who had a stint with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), is being assigned to Dagupan to help curb illegal drug trading in the city which has long been known as a hub for the illegal drug trade in the northern Luzon area.
With the issue unsettled, Caramat’s tenure as chief of police of Dagupan is extended up to December this year.
This is his second extension in his tour of duty in Dagupan, the first having expired last August 31 after his two-year term ended in June.
Meanwhile, Caramat said he is due to go on “schooling” but he also has not received any confirmation about it from the National Police Commission.
