LINGAYEN–The Provincial Government of Pangasinan, in partnership with the PHILSPADA-NPC (Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled – National Paralympics Committee), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of Education (DepEd), hosted a seminar for trainers and coaches of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) on September 26-28 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here.

In line with the continuous effort in sports development for PWDs, the three-day seminar on “Training the Trainers, Technical Classification Seminar (Phase II) and Games” was designed to encourage sports for PWDs in the local or grassroots level.

Provincial Administration Rafael F. Baraan emphasized the ‘value of compassion and dedication’ in order to give a fuller meaning to life as he encouraged the delegates to endeavour in honing the potentials of PWDs.

Baraan, who momentarily serves as Acting Governor while Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. is out of the country for an official business trip in Guam, added that the provincial government has been giving special attention to the special children rendering some specific programs which cater to their optimum development.

PHILSPADA Regional Director Delia Ortega, in welcoming the delegates, stressed that “something will come out with commitment” even as she said that PHILSPADA Region 1 has been active in sending PWD athletes in various regional and national competitions.

The delegates of the seminar are trainers and coaches coming from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B, 5, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and National Capital Region (NCR).

The program has three components: Training the trainers and coaches, Classification Seminar and Competition.

Resource Speakers of the lectures on sports were: Dr. Raul Michael Sembrano (Classification Seminar – Overview, Classification Seminar – Different Sports); Joel Deriada (Athletics); Antonio Ong (Swimming); Vernon Perea (WheelChair Basketball); Aaron Morales (Table Tennis); and Alfredo Estacion (Goalball/Futsal).

A Practicum / Talent Identification Proper was held on the last day of the seminar.

Executive Assistant III Modesto Operania, Provincial Sports Director, said the province is now a favorite sports destination as regional and national sporting events (like the Palarong Pambansa staged last May at NRSCC) are being staged here.

Operania reported that the Northern Luzon regional leg of Batang Pinoy is set to happen at the NRSCC on October 10-13 while the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games will be staged in the province next year. (PIO/Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca)
