Blood Samaritan project launched
THE Rotary Club of Dagupan East (RCDE) and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Pangasinan Chapter will launch on September 3 the ‘Blood Samaritan Project: RC-RC Partners In Service for Peace and Humanity’, a long-term partnership for providing blood to the indigent.
The project aims to generate blood resources that will be reserved for poor patients.
“A strong and stable partnership between RCDE and PRC- Pangasinan Chapter has enabled us to commit ourselves in addressing this issue,” said Dr. Vivencio Villaflor, chairman of the board of directors of PRC Pangasinan chapter.
Villaflor said the project will be a “joint endeavor in addressing the humanitarian need for safe, adequate and equitable distribution of blood supply.”
He noted that in cases when a patient needs blood for transfusion, the Red Cross is mandated to provide blood, but safe and quality blood involves costs that most indigent patients cannot afford.
The blood itself is free, but the collection and processing of one unit of safe and quality whole blood costs P1,500.
PRC recovers the costs of blood service operations by charging clients a nominal Blood Processing fee based on the actual costs.
In 2011, the Blood Center operations served a total of 998 patients under the Indigency Program that cost almost P1.5 million.
Meanwhile, RCDE, in celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, will sponsor 40 patients, said Florame Magalong, PRC Pangasinan chapter administrator.–Eva Visperas
