ALAMINOS City emerged fourth in the National Literacy Awards contest-Component City category held September 18-20 in Baguio City.

City Information Officer Toots Orfinada said aside from the trophy awarded to the city government, Alaminos also went home with a P40,000 cash prize to be used for literacy programs and projects.

Front runner in the category is Balanga City in Bataan; followed by Tabako City in Albay; Tuguegarao City in Cagayan; and Malaybalay City in Bukidnon, 5th place.

Secretary Sonny Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, the event’s keynote speaker, said the national government, through the Department of Education (DeEd), continues to work hard in pushing for the attainment of ‘Education for All’ to make more Filipinos functionally literate.

On July 9 this year, the evaluation team of the Literacy Coordinating Council came to Alaminos City to validate the literacy programs of the city, which include Bright Child, Batang Plaza, E-Van, E–Kawayan, Scholarship Program, Literacy Mapping, and Project ADAM (Anti-Drug Abuse Movement).

The National Literacy Conference and Awards aims to recognize outstanding individuals or organizations and local government units for commitment, dedication and contributions to literacy programs in their communities. (PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
