ONLY 201 persons with disability (PWD) in Pangasinan enlisted during the national special registration day for the sector nationwide last Aug. 11, a low turnout given the estimated 1.4 million total number of voters in the province.

A special registration for PWDs was also held Thursday in Umingan because none had registered on Aug. 11 but there are about 162 PWDs in the town.

Lawyer Jennifer Balarbar, officer-in-charge provincial election registrar, said PWDS and all other voters can still register during office hours until Oct. 31 in preparation for the May 13, 2013 elections.

Balarbar said registered PWDs also need to validate their records, if they had voted in the past, for their electronic photo, thumb mark and signature in the identification card.

She added that the Commission on Elections would also like to know from them how they can extend special assistance.

SK VOTERS

Meanwhile, Balarbar urged Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members to register as well because they are not automatically considered as regular voters even after voting in a special election.

Feedbacks from municipal and city election registrars, there is a low turnout among SK members.

In Alcala town where there were more than 2,000 SK registered voters in last special elections but only about 200 have so far registered as regular voters for the next elections.

In Laoac town, there were more than 900 SK registered voters but only 33 have enlisted as regular voters.—Eva Visperas
